Repair canister vacuum that intermittently starts/stops?

    in Small Appliance Repair

Hi! I have a canister vacuum. The brand is "The Bank," which I think is made by Simplicity and rebranded. Anyhow, it has a power head (the part that does the vacuuming on the floor) that starts and stops as I vacuum. Seems like it might be a short in the wire somewhere? Either in the power head itself or in the corded wand?

I'm not experienced with electrical but I'm willing to experiment a little. Anyone have some advice for an amateur or suggest a video I could watch to see if I can repair it myself or with a little help?

The first thing to look at is the electrical contacts in in all the parts going to the power head. With the vacuum unplugged inspect all the contacts starting at the vacuum itself and ending at the power head. The contacts should all be shiny and clean. If everything passes inspection plug the vacuum in and run it with the power head on exactly like you would do while using it. With the vacuum laid out on the floor flex the different joints, swivels and hose until the power head stops running. You're looking for a specific area and orientation that causes the power head to stop running. Report back.
