I thought that sharing this would inspire people here to consider that repairs can be about more then just lubricating a chain or pumping tires. This broken bike rack was given to me and I used some stainless steel sheet metal to repair it so that it could be given new life.

I had a chat with the maestro of repair and suggested that we as a community can look into using a 3D printer to create replacements for plastic parts that have broken. I don't want to speak for anyone, but there are community shops where parts can be printed cheaply. If you want to learn about the process, here is a video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icTOtB7x3VE I've created some objects in CAD that were then printed and depending on how exact it has to be, the process can be quite good. If you are not experienced in CAD, you can sometimes download a common part from sites like grabcad - https://grabcad.com/ If people who are examining a broken device find that a plastic part needs replacing, perhaps it can be printed rather then shipped from another country.

One of the things that I've done for myself and friends is to create items that keep bikes and accessories working longer. This can be more then just bike repair. It can be a replacement mount for a bike light or a reinforcing piece for a bike rack or a 3D printed part.
